The Coal Authority Interactive Viewer: Desktop version help
Navigating the map
Choose where you would like to investigate. Enter a placename or postcode of interest in the search box indicated in the image below.
Move around the map by left-clicking and dragging the mouse in the direction you wish to travel. To zoom in or out of the map, use the plus and minus buttons on the bottom-left of the map. Selecting the 'Home' icon above those buttons will take you back to the map's opening extent. Alternatively, you can use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the map. Holding the Shift key and dragging a rectangle allows you to zoom in to that extent. Pressing the '+' and '-' keys on your keyboard will zoom in/out on the centre of the map.
British National Grid coordinates for the current mouse position are displayed in the bottom left of the screen.
Displaying data layers
Available data layers are listed in the top right of the screen (see image below). Click on the dropdown at the top to toggle between Coal Mining Data layers, Planning layers and Environment Agency Data layers. Select a checkbox associated with a layer to display it on the map. A map layer will be displayed in grey and disabled when it is not visible at the current scale. Zoom in to activate a disabled layer. Clicking on the layer name will display help for that layer.
Getting feature details
Left-click on a feature on the map to return its attribute details. Links to further information and to zoom to the selected feature are also provided. If more than one feature is present at the selected location, links to step through all available features are presented (see image below).
Other available tools
Additional tools are available below the list of available map layers (see image below). Click on the 'Key' button to display a key for the currently visible layers. The transparency slider will update the transparency of all selected layers displayed on the base map. The Help button will link to this help page.
